Hamilton Police Service (HPS) is warning the public of an increase in the number of street robberies involving the theft of high-end winter jackets.

Hamilton Police Service (HPS) is warning the public of an increase in the number of street robberies involving the theft of high-end winter jackets. Over the past few weeks, thirteen individuals have been targeted for their winter coats in the downtown and west Hamilton neighbourhoods, according to HPS.

“Victims have generally been wearing Canada Goose or Moose Knuckle brands and have been swarmed by a group of youths or the perpetrator has brandished a weapon before demanding the victim’s coat,” according to police. “The coats may then be sold through social media platforms or through word-of-mouth.”

Arrests have been made in some cases but the involved accused persons are youths who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Hamilton Police are reminding the public to take measures to avoid being a victim of a street theft:

  • Do not walk alone, especially after dark
  • Follow the safest route possible. Avoid shortcuts and deserted areas. Try to keep to well lit, busy streets.
  • Walk with a purpose and be aware of your surroundings.

Police add that it’s important to report theft to police as soon as possible.
