The Hamilton Police have reported a concerning increase in robberies and swarming incidents occurring at community festivals and fairs.
On Saturday (Sept. 23) police say multiple “youth-related” swarming incidents took place at the Ancaster Fair.
According to investigators, there was one instance where the victim was swarmed and had their property stolen. The victim was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.
Officers say, such incidents are troubling and are currently under investigation.
With the Rockton Fair just two weeks away, the Hamilton Police are urging the public to exercise heightened awareness of their surroundings when attending festivals.
In response to these events, the Hamilton Police Service is providing the following safety recommendations:
- Conceal Valuables: Conceal valuable items, including smartphones, jewelry, and wallets, to reduce the risk of becoming a target.
- Travel in Groups: Whenever feasible, attend festivals and fairs with a group of friends or family members to enhance safety and discourage potential incidents.
- Stay Vigilant: Be attentive to your surroundings and trust your instincts. If something appears unusual or suspicious, do not hesitate to seek assistance from event security or the police.
Hamilton Police say they remain committed to the safety and security of all community members and encourage everyone to enjoy festivals responsibly as well as watch out for one another.
