Get ready to dust off your roller skates and dance the night away with the Hammer City Roller Derby squad, as Pier 8 transforms into a disco on Aug. 25.
Taking place at 47 Discovery Dr. between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., the outdoor rink will come alive with the spirit of disco, offering attendees a chance to relive the vibes of the ’70s.
“It’s a different type of skating than the roller derby team is used to doing,” Hammer City Roller Derby Tara Kay Palermo told intheHammer.com.
“It’s just going to be a fun outdoor skate where you can come and meet some people and meet the team.”
“But we’re really excited,” Palermo added.
This party carries a cause too, rallying attendees to support Welcome House, a local North End neighbourhood food bank.
The first 100 guests can indulge in free ice cream, and the proceeds from further purchases will be directly donated to Welcome House.
“Whenever we play at home, whether, you know, when we’re playing a team, we always have a food drive for our local food bank.”
“So it’s something the team is really passionate about and we’re really happy to support this organization,” Palermo said.
“And, you know, we were never turning down an opportunity to skate,” she added.
The organizers have also set up a video skate-through LED photobooth tunnel – that adds a modern twist to the disco-infused festivities.
Disco Sk8 is a free event and is open to all age groups.
