The Special Investigations Unit (SIU)–Ontario’s civilian agency that investigates altercations between civilians and police that result in death or serious injury–is investigating an incident that occurred in Hamilton. 

Around 4:30 p.m. this afternoon (July 7), Hamilton Police Services (HPS) were called to the area of Gage Avenue North and Cannon Street East in relation to a domestic disturbance. 

While investigating, HPS encountered a man in a car who was armed with a gun. A shootout ensued, and a man suffered a gunshot wound and was subsequently transported to hospital. 

The SIU has announced it has launched an investigation into the incident.
