Pride Hamilton announced Thursday (May 14) that they would be taking this year’s event to the digital sphere in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Pride in the Park, which is usually held in Gage Park in June, was cancelled back in March as it became clear that the pandemic would have an impact on the country for months.

“This doesn’t mean that we’re not having Pride at all,” Pride Hamilton said at the time.

“It just means that we’re going to have to tap into the resilience and creativity that flows through this city’s amazing Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ communities and come up with another way to do this.”

The answer is Digital Pride Hamilton 2020.

“We’re thrilled to be able to celebrate Pride in Hamilton with everyone and look forward to showcasing some amazing #HamOnt talent,” a Facebook post announcing the digital event on Thursday said.

It will be held on June 14 from 2 pm to 5 pm and is hosted in collaboration with CoBALT Connects — the local non-profit arts organization responsible for making the ‘Hamilton Shows Up’ series a reality.

Pride organizers are currently in the process of recruiting performers and artists for the event, the post says.

Those interested in lending their talents to the event can apply here.

“We know that some of you have already applied,” the post said. “Not to worry, we have your applications (and it’s why we’ve kept the application open).”

Applications are due no later than the end of the day on May 22 (which is next Friday).

“We apologize for the quick turnaround time but the pandemic has presented some unavoidable challenges,” the post says.

Organizers are also issuing a call for sponsors for Digital Pride Hamilton 2020.

Given the current lockdown conditions, fundraising efforts for the event were significantly hampered.

“Pride’s ability to raise funds has been extremely limited by the pandemic and we could really use your support,” they say on Facebook.

“We will be accepting general donations and will circulate that information at a later date.”

Sponsors can submit their applications here.

While it’s clear that this isn’t the ideal platform for an event that celebrates love, diversity, togetherness and community, this year’s event marks a significant milestone: 30 years of Pride in Hamilton.

Therefore, organizers are committed to hosting a physical celebration once the danger of the virus has passed.

“Pride is determined to do something in person to celebrate local artists and not-for-profit champions as soon as there’s the all-clear and time to plan it safely,” they say in a message posted to their website.

More details about the virtual event will be available after organizers have lined up performers and sponsorship.
