Niagara Police have arrested a 22-year-old Hamilton man after discovering his role in an accident that saw a 79-year-old female crossing guard get trapped under a truck on Sept. 5 in St. Catharines.

While initial reports just said the crossing guard was trapped under a Ford F-150 at the intersection of Haig St. and Carlton St. at 3:15 p.m., it turned out there was more to the story.

After investigation, it seems the Hamilton man driving a GMC Sierra pickup truck made an “abrupt left turn northbound onto Haig St.” causing the westbound F-150 to swerve to avoid a collision.

At that point, the F-150 lost control and careened onto the sidewalk where the crossing guard stood. Niagara EMS paramedics and St. Catharines Fire workers had to free her as she was trapped under the truck.

She was sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries but is now recovering at home.

The Hamilton driver was charged on Oct. 1 with careless driving causing bodily harm and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the investigating officers by calling 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1024233, reference NRPS incident 23-99854.
