Pearl Jam announced Monday night (March 9) that they would be postponing the first leg of their North American tour.

The band was set to play Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre on March 24 but the band said in a tweet Monday that given the current outbreak of COVID-19 that they’ve made the tough decision to postpone their tour

“We are being told that being part of large gatherings is high on the list of things to avoid as this global health crisis is now beginning to affect all of our lives,” the band tweeted.

“It is with deep frustration and regret that we are forced to make this most unfortunate of announcements…This scheduled first leg of our PJ/Gigaton tour will need to be postponed and shows rescheduled for a later date.”

So while the thousands of Hamilton fans might be disappointed in the decision, there is the promise that they will pass through town at a later date.

The band said that Ticketmaster will be in touch shortly with ticketholders and current tickets will be honoured for new dates, which will be set once the outbreak calms down.

What also might cheer PJ fans is that in the tweet thread announcing the postponement, in true PJ fashion, the band took a shot at their government’s handling of the coronavirus.

“It certainly hasn’t helped that there’s been no clear messages from our government regarding people’s safety and our ability to go to work,” the said.

“Having no examples of our national health department’s ability to get ahead of this, we have no reason to believe that it will be under control in the coming weeks ahead.”

The release of their latest album, Gigaton, will not be delayed. It’s still slated for full release March 27.
