An outbreak of COVID-19 has been declared at St. Peter’s Hospital in central Hamilton after a patient at the palliative care facility tested positive for the virus on Monday (April 20).

In a press release issued Monday evening, Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) says that in consultation with Hamilton Public Health Services, they declared an outbreak of COVID-19 on an inpatient unit at its St. Peter’s Hospital site.

“The 3 West Palliative Care Unit where the outbreak has been declared, is now closed to admissions,” the release says.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the 3 East Palliative Care Unit is also closed to admissions.”

HHS says that other patients and staff who met exposure criteria with the patient have been notified and all patients on 3 West are being tested for the virus.

“Additionally, the unit is being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected,” the release says.

“Where appropriate, we are also informing family members to ensure that they are kept apprised of the safety measures we are taking.”

The City of Hamilton is currently reporting eight institutional and community outbreaks, from which 94 of the city’s confirmed cases stem.

Of the 94, 62 are patients or residents at the facilities while another 31 are staff.

Hamilton is reporting a total of 331 cases of COVID-19 in the City as of Monday. There have been 16 fatalities related to the virus.
