The outbreak of COVID-19 at St. Peter’s Hospital has been declared over after it claimed the life of one patient.

In a press release issued Wednesday (May 6) evening, Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) said that the outbreak affecting the 3 West Palliative Care Unit at St. Peter’s, and which halted patient admissions for weeks, has been declared over.

In total, five patients and five staff from the unit tested positive for the virus.

One patient, who had underlying health issues, passed away, as a result, HHS confirmed.

“Our deepest condolences are extended to the patient’s family and friends,” the release said.

The outbreak was initially declared on April 20, after a patient in the ward tested positive for COVID-19.

Expanded testing for the virus of all of St. Peter’s patients was completed last Thursday (April 30), as per Hamilton Public Health Service’s protocols and HHS’s recently expanded surveillance practice. No other patients tested positive.

The unit has been reopened to admissions, HHS says in the release. Strict visitor restrictions and screening at all HHS sites across the city remain in effect, however.

Hamilton Public Health Services is currently reporting that the city is grappling with 12 outbreaks at long-term care or congregate facilities.

As of Wednesday, the City of Hamilton reports that there have been 468 cases of COVID-19 in the community and 23 deaths related to the virus.
