Hamilton police Det. Sgt. Steve Bereziuk provided an update on the investigation into the stabbing death of 14-year-old Devan Selvey outside of Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School.

On Wednesday (Oct. 9), Bereziuk held a press conference to announce officially that the two 16-year-olds arrested Tuesday were released unconditionally after the pair were interviewed “at length” into the “early hours” of Wednesday morning, he said. He said that there was no deal made with the pair in exchange for information.

He said investigators continue to work through the evidence but are not seeking additional suspects in relation to Selvey’s death, but did not rule out the possibility that other charges could be forthcoming in relation to the fatal incident to which a number of bystanders bore witness — including the victim’s own mother.

“The two charges that have been laid so far are appropriate for where we are in the investigation,” Bereziuk said. Several witnesses to the assault, he confirmed, have turned video evidence over to police.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday morning confirming Selvay was killed as a result of a stab wound. Bereziuk confirmed that it is believed the 14-year-old accused is the one who wielded the knife.

Bereziuk also said that investigators are aware of an incident involving the victim and the theft of a bike but at this time, there is no evidence linking the accused in the stabbing to the earlier September bike theft. He could not confirm, however, if the police had any previous reports of bullying from Selvey.

Selvey’s mother, Shari-Ann, gave a statement to police earlier Wednesday and Bereziuk said he’s spoken to members of the Selvey family but not Shari-Ann in an effort to give her some space.

“I can’t imagine what she’s going through,” he said.

When asked how he would advise children to respond to bullying in the wake of Devan’s murder, Bereziuk said: “You gotta tell somebody. Tell somebody you trust. Don’t bottle it up. Don’t hide that.”

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact Detective Mike McNaughton at 905-546-4123.
