New Hamilton college program offers 500 kids a peek into the automotive industry

Mohawk College in Hamilton recently announced a new initiative for elementary and secondary students that will introduce them to advanced skills needed for careers in the automotive industry.
The ‘Put Your Future in Motion’ program was created in collaboration with the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN).
It is expected to run until the end of the year and is set to accommodate over 500 students ranging from Grades 5 through 12, hailing from local school boards across the province.
Participants will engage in skills-building exercises, awareness-raising activities, and a chance to explore careers in the technology, sustainability, and automotive industries.
“Our government will continue to invest in innovative projects that help workers and job seekers get the skills they need to land better jobs with bigger pay cheques in the auto industry,” said Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton.
The initiative will include engaging student workshops at the Fennell Campus and summer camps hosted at the Marshall School of Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship in Stoney Creek.
“The automotive industry is drastically and rapidly changing as the era of EV transportation expands and autonomous vehicles emerge,” said David Santi, Dean of the Marshall School of Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship.
“Put Your Future in Motion will introduce students to exciting future-focused skills and opportunities in post-secondary education and in careers,” Santi added.
To ensure inclusivity, the program has partnered with Techsploration, a not-for-profit organization specializing in hands-on, mentor-led programming for young women in Grades 9 through 12.
This partnership aims to connect high school students with skilled tradespeople and technology industry professionals in the automotive field.
“Students can participate in skills-building and awareness activities and explore careers in the connected world, sustainability, and automotive industries at a Put Your Future in Motion pop-up in downtown Hamilton,” Mohawk College said in a press release.
