A brand new bake shop has opened its doors for the first time in Hamilton today.

The bakery, Batches, started a little while ago as an online baked-to-order business founded by Kate Batchelor. According to her website biography, she was halfway through a bachleors degree is Psychology when she started to cook up the idea.

Inspired by her baker grandfather, she decided after graduation she needed a new recipe for her life since it “was just too darn short to do something that I didn’t love.” She went back to school, this time at George Brown to study baking and business.

After a second graduation, she started her online business taking individual orders with appearances at local farmer’s markets. However, she always dreamed of brick and mortar store but remained online while “while I learn a little more and save a lot more money,” as she put it.

That changed on Oct. 30, when Batchelor announced she had secured a space in Hamilton. “We’re going to have our own home for the holidays this year,” she wrote. The spot is temporary however, running as an eight-week pop-up shop.

“I’m so so excited to move into the cutest little bakery space and spend the next eight weeks baking up all of your favourite sweet and savoury treats. You’ll be able to pop in and grab soup for lunch or chicken pot pie for dinner without having to preorder,” she said on her Facebook.

Batchelor is taking over 321 Dundurn St. S. in Hamiton as of Nov. 9. The place was previously home to Cake + Loaf, where she trained as an intern during her time at George Brown. “As an alumni, it’s so sad to see Cake +Loaf close but exciting to come full circle and fill the neighbourhood with delicious smells once again.”

The bakery will be open Wednesday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, it will be pick up only for a little while. Order can be submitted online or to (905) 802-0686 or email.
