A Brampton man has been arrested nearly a year after a suspected drug deal in Hamilton devolved into a fatal shootout.

Shots rang out at 111 Herkimer Street on October 3, 2023. The address is an apartment building dense residential area in the central Durand neighbourhood. When first responders arrived, they found Tito “Grizz” Kelly, 36,  in a nearby alleyway.

Kelly was clinging to life when discovered but succumbed to his injuries in hospital. He was the city’s eighth murder victim of 2023. Kelly is survived by his three children, mother, girlfriend and three siblings.

Hamilton Police did not initially identify Kelly but later released his identity. Shortly after Kelly was found, a second man appeared at a Hamilton hospital suffering a gunshot wound to the arm. His identity has been withheld. Police believe the two incidents were connected.

Investigators believe the incident began as a drug deal ” that led to both sides exchanging gunfire.”

On July 10, 2024, Hamilton Police announced the arrest of Donte Smith, 36 of Brampton, on a manslaughter charge. He remains in custody at least until a bail hearing on July 11.

However, they believe there were tow other suspects involved. They did not provide any details or descriptions of this pair of suspects.

Anyone with information can call police at  905-546-3836 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
