Last week, PetSmart Charities held one of their National Adoption Weekends (NAW) at their stores across the country and they want animal lovers to know it was a huge success.

Over the course of the three-day event, held from Feb. 28 to March 1, 1,940 animals were adopted across the country.

In the Hamilton area, PetSmarts in Ancaster, Stoney Creek, Brantford and Burlington who participated helped facilitate the adoption of 120 animals.

“Not only was it the biggest February NAW ever in Canada, but a record-breaking NAW across North America,” PetSmart Charities’ Kaitlyn Saint told InTheHammer.

“This weekend many pets found their fur-ever homes.”

Across North America, there were 32,985 pet adoptions, Saint confirmed. On average, these NAWs result in approximately 25,000 adoptions.

For the National Adoption Weekend, animal welfare organizations bring adoptable pets to participating stores to connect them with potential new families.

It’s not just cats and dogs up for adoption: small animals, including bunnies, hamsters and gerbils are also looking for new homes.

PetSmart holds National Adoption Weekend events four times a year and finds home for tens of thousands of animals annually.

Through PetSmart Charities’ National Adoption Weekends, PetSmart says they have helped to facilitate more than nine-million adoptions, more than any other brick-and-mortar organization.

The next one is in Hamilton is June 5 to 7.

If you weren’t able to make it out to the event this past weekend, prospective adoptive pet parents can always visit PetSmart’s pet finder at petsmartcharities.ca to see which pets in the area need forever homes.
