Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) says that following extensive testing at St. Peter’s Hospital where an outbreak of COVID-19 was declared earlier this week, more positive cases have been found.

In a news release issued Thursday (April 23), HHS said that all patients and health-care workers of St. Peter’s 3 West Palliative Care Unit and the 3 East Palliative Care Unit are being tested.

The increased testing found that one more patient and three staff of 3 West, where the first patient tested positive, have confirmed cases of the virus.

“All other patients on these units have tested negative,” the release said.

“The Palliative Care Unit remains closed to new admissions and is being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.”

On Monday, both 3 West and, ‘out of an abundance of caution,’ 3 East were closed after the first patient tested positive and an outbreak was declared at the palliative-care hospital.

As per recently established protocols that allow for increased testing at facilities where outbreaks occur, HHS and Hamilton’s Public Health Service announced they would be testing more patients and staff at St. Peter’s.

“Where appropriate, we are also informing family members to ensure that they are kept apprised of the safety measures we are taking,” HHS said in Thursday’s news release.

At this time, HHS says, all other units at the hospital remain open, but there are strict visitor restrictions and screening guidelines in place at all Hamilton hospitals.

The City of Hamilton is currently reporting seven institutional and community active outbreaks, from which 103 of the city’s 359 confirmed cases stem.
