Metrolinx continuing measures against coronavirus after reported case on GO transit

Transit agency Metrolinx is continuing to work with Toronto Public Health after it was reported that a resident diagnosed with COVID-19 recently took the GO bus.
The man, who was travelling from Las Vegas, reportedly used public transit in Mississauga, Milton and Toronto, taking the route 27 GO bus between March 2 and March 4.
At this time, health officials say the risk of transmission on public transit is considered low.
“Public transit use in this particular circumstance and the exposure with respect to public transit is considered low risk,” said Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health.
Metrolinx says they’ve identified the transit vehicles used on those days, and have taken them out of service for the time being as a precaution.
Additionally, they’ve begun cleaning their vehicles with a long-acting, anti-microbial agent in order to provide extra protection for staff and customers.

“To date, more than 150 buses have been treated, with an additional 40 more being completed each day,” Metrolinx reports.
Other steps the company has been taking include distributing gel-based hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes throughout all work places and GO stations, including their buses.
The Metrolinx COVID-19 response team says it will continue to monitor the situation very closely, and reiterates that the risk for both customers and staff remains very low.
