McMaster Children’s Hospital celebrated the opening of a new 23-room, state-of-the-art unit this week.

The Joyce Family Foundation Inpatient Unit features nine complex-care rooms and 14 general pediatric rooms, all situated along the unit’s perimeter to allow for plenty of natural light.

Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation says in a press release that the space was designed to be welcoming and in consideration of patient and comfort and mental well-being.

Seeing as how McMaster is the fourth largest inpatient pediatric hospital in Canada, and the second largest provider of inpatient pediatric services in Ontario, and sees nearly 290,000 patients a year, the new unit couldn’t come at a better time.

The unit also includes a ‘Care by Parent’ suite which provides parents with an environment in which they can learn how to provide specialized care to their children with complex needs, in a setting with clinical support.

“We are extremely grateful to The Joyce Family Foundation for making this Inpatient Unit possible,” said Pearl Veenema, president and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. “It is a wonderful tribute to Ron Joyce’s passion for children’s health care.”

A portion of the gift from The Joyce Family Foundation to McMaster Children’s Hospital Foundation helped to complete the redevelopment of the space.

The new unit also houses modern ‘collaboration’ spaces and conference rooms for physicians and staff at the hospital.
