Hamilton police say a 21-year-old Scarborough man appeared in court today after police allegedly recovered a loaded firearm during an investigation in Hamilton.

Police say one male remains outstanding. He has been identified as 20-year-old Hamilton man Deren Akyeam-Pong (pictured above) and a warrant for his arrest exists in relation to a previous occurrence.

Polices say that on Monday, Oct. 28, 2019, shortly after 11:00 a.m., officers arrived in a residential area in the Upper Wellington Street and Limeridge Road East area to investigate two males who were believed to be involved in criminal activities and “likely in possession of weapons.”

Police say one suspect was sitting in a vehicle while the other was standing directly outside. As police approached, the suspects reportedly fled the scene.

Police say one male was later located at the rear of a nearby strip plaza. He was arrested and taken into police custody.

According to police, the suspect was properly identified after he initially provided false information to officers and was further charged with violations to previous court-ordered conditions.

Police allege the vehicle involved was searched by police and a loaded handgun was recovered.

Police have charged Youssouf Hassan, 21, with obstructing a peace officer, failing to comply with recognizance, firearm-related offences and more.
