Emergency lighting problems at Hamilton’s Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre are not expected to be resolved until Friday afternoon – eight days after the community centre closed its doors and cancelled all programs and services.
Janine Gaunt, the Senior Manager for Recreation District Operations at the City, said the facility is experiencing a lighting issue which is affecting the center’s emergency lighting system. “As per multiple regulations under the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code and the Ontario Pool Regulations, the recreation centre is not permitted to operate until this issue is resolved,” she said Tuesday.
The “anticipated” re-opening is Friday after 4 p.m., she added, with the hope the problem can be fixed by then.
All drop-in and registered programming and all rentals and user-groups at the recreation centre, located adjacent to Tim Hortons Field, east of downtown, have been cancelled since last Thursday afternoon, including swim classes in the pool and pickleball, track and volleyball in the gymnasium.
The outdoor Serafini Family Skate Pad remains open and Camp Kidaca activities have been relocated to Central Memorial Recreation Centre.inthehammer's Editorial Standards and Policies advertising
