The City of Hamilton is reporting that there are 661 cases of COVID-19 in the community as of Wednesday (May 27) — that includes 653 lab-confirmed cases and eight probable.

This marks a twelve-case increase from Tuesday’s reporting of 649.

Hamilton’s COVID-19 death toll is 34, with the most recent deaths over the past couple of weeks attributed to an outbreak of the virus at The Rosslyn Retirement Home.

In that outbreak, more than 80 people, the vast majority of them residents of the facility, tested positive for the virus.

The long-term care home in East Hamilton has been evacuated and at least seven residents have died from the virus.

According to the city’s COVID-19 website, there are six active outbreaks at long-term care facilities across Hamilton.

There have been 436 cases of the virus that have been resolved to date in Hamilton, which accounts for 66 per cent of the city’s overall case count.

Provincewide, Ontario reported 292 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday and 32 more deaths.

It’s the second straight day of fewer than 300 new cases, which follows several consecutive days of more than 400.

The provincial total is now 26,483, an increase of 1.1 per cent over the previous day. The total includes 2,155 deaths and 20,372 resolved cases.

The number of tests reported on Wednesday jumped to 15,133, from just 9,875 the previous day. It’s the first time in 10 days that the province has come close to its goal of completing 16,000 tests per day.
