Hamilton’s Public Health Services (PHS) has launched an interactive map showing where cases of COVID-19 has occurred in the city.

At a virtual media briefing on Friday (June 12), Hamilton Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Elizabeth Richardson, shared the new map and explained how they’ve kept track of cases in the city.

She pointed out that while some neighbourhoods have higher concentrations of cases, that may not be where the virus was contracted, meaning that someone registered as having the virus on East Mountain might have contracted it in a health-care setting in West Hamilton.

Also, neighbourhoods, where institutional outbreaks occurred, will have a higher concentration of cases, Richardson pointed out.

The city’s interactive COVID-19 map can be found here.

Richardson also told reporters that PHS has worked on a set of guidelines for restaurants to help them with reopening when they’re finally OK’d to do so.

In them, public health offers protocols to ensure physical distancing between staff and customers and wearing masks except when eating, among others.

As of Friday, the City of Hamilton is reporting 755 cases of COVID-19 in the community since the virus was first reported in the city in early March.

The latest tally is just four more cases since last reporting 24 hours ago.

According to the city’s data, there are 748 confirmed cases and seven probable.

The city’s death toll remains at 42 while the number of cases resolved has climbed to 598, which accounts for 79 per cent of Hamilton’s overall cases.

This means there are just under 160 active cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton at the moment.

Earlier this week, it was announced that there were currently no active outbreaks at congregate or long-term care facilities in the city.

It’s the first time since March 19, when the city’s first outbreak was declared at Heritage Green Nursing home on the Stoney Creek mountain, that the city has been outbreak-free.

There are still 37 people in Hamilton hospitals being treated for the virus, a number that has not changed since early this week.

Meanwhile, Ontario reported 182 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, an increase of 0.6 per cent over the previous day and the lowest daily number of cases since late March.

The new number brings the province to a total of 31,726 cases. The province also reported 11 new deaths for a total of 2,498.

There are 26,187 resolved cases — an additional 302 from the previous day.

The province is also reporting a record number of tests completed — 28,335.
