Most of Hamilton’s waterfalls will be reopening to the public next week, but there will be some restrictions in place to help protect against the spread fo COVID-19.

At Tuesday’s virtual media update, Mayor Fred Eisenberger confirmed that most of Hamilton’s waterfalls, with the exception of three, and their associated parking lots would be open to the public starting next Wednesday (July 15).

Those that will remain closed include Tews Falls, Websters Falls and Dundas Peak because the use of shuttle services are currently not available due to COVID-19.

Eisenberger reminded residents that they will be expected to maintain a physical distance of two metres or six feet from others outside their social circle.

All of the typical COVID-19 precautions remain in place while visiting waterfalls. Including:

  • Don’t join large crowds or groups.
  • Wash your hands: Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer or wash your hands with soap and warm water as soon as possible.
  • Don’t visit waterfalls if you are sick or showing signs of being sick.

Eisenberger also suggested that bringing and wearing a mask at these locations would also fall under best practices when accessing these areas where, in many places, it’s difficult to maintain the prescribed physical distance.

Several waterfall locations and outdoor areas that are under the care of the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) will remain closed until further notice, due to their limited size.

The areas that will remain closed include:

  • Crooks Hollow
  • Spencer Gorge
  • Tiffany Falls
  • Devil’s Punchbowl
  • Borer’s Falls
  • Spencer Adventure Trail

When visiting HCA areas, there are some protocols in place. To learn more about what’s open and how to access HCA areas, visit their website.
