Starting Wednesday (Sept. 9) drivers will be able to go either north or southbound on Queen Street South in Hamilton’s downtown.

The Queen St S two-way conversion project between Main Street and Aberdeen will officially be complete on Wednesday, a City of Hamilton press release issued Tuesday says.

Earlier this summer, construction on the project got underway to convert the historically southbound street between Main West and Herkimer to two-way.

The project included several upgrades to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety along the busy road.

  • Some of the upgrades include:
  • Replacements of sidewalk corners and curbs
  • New traffic signal poles and lights
  • New audible pedestrian pushbuttons
  • Enhanced bike lane safety features including new cycle paths, concrete separation curbs, bike lane knockdown sticks and bicycle traffic signal lights
  • Traffic signal changes to include southbound movement

The two-way conversion of Queen between Main and King will be completed in 2021, the city’s press release says, pending the finalization of localized development construction.

Crews are expected to continue working in the area over the next few weeks to complete final touches, but the road will be open for travel starting Wednesday.

The construction of a new traffic signal at Queen North and Napier Street will begin on Monday (Sept. 14) and be completed in October.
