The City of Hamilton announced Wednesday (April 1) that effective immediately, the escarpment stairs will be closed to the public until further notice.

In a tweet sent Wednesday afternoon, the City said that previous recommendations to avoid all but essential use of the stairs went ignored and they’re now forced to close them entirely.

The city also announced Tuesday that following provincial direction issued on March 30, they have implemented some additional closures of dog parks, skate parks, the Bayfront Park boat launch and several parking lots in high traffic areas in Hamilton.

The City said they decided to suspend all City-run programming and extend the closure of all City facilities, parks, playgrounds, sports fields and City administration facilities until May 25, but that number is subject to change depending on when the danger of COVID-19 has passed.

“The first line of defence is you,” said Mayor Fred Eisenberger at Tuesday’s virtual press briefing. “Everything we’re asking you to do is to help prevent the spread [of the virus].”
