The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) with a little help from some friends, has allocated $55,000 to help support families during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) with a little help from some friends, has allocated $55,000 to help support families during the COVID-19 lockdown.

More specifically, the board has provided hundreds of grocery store gift cards to families struggling to make ends meet.

A portion of donated funds has also gone towards helping support the technological needs of some students accessing distance learning.

Initially, a little more than $20,000 — donated from the Hamilton Bulldogs Foundation, the HWCDSB and its Spiritual/Social Network — was used to purchase 410 $50 grocery store gift cards to cover the second phase of the shutdown from April 6 to May 1.

With the closures extended to at least May 31, the board explains in an update on their website, several community organizations came forward to provide further financial support.

The Hamilton Community Foundation recently made a $30,000 donation, with half of the funds supporting technological needs and the other half directed towards fulfilling more grocery store gift cards.

Another donation of $2,500 was made by Attridge Transportation Inc., matched by the HWCDSB, will also help see that more students get access to nutritious food.

“While we realize that this is a just small gesture of support, we hope that it provides some financial relief to families who may be facing some economic barriers,” said chairperson Patrick Daly in a letter home to HWCDSB families.

“The assistance provided gives witness to the goodness of staff throughout our school system and wonderful community partners like the Hamilton Bulldogs Foundation, Attridge Transportation Inc. and the Hamilton Community Foundation.”
