As though we needed to be reminded, the City of Hamilton is asking residents to not use April Fools’ Day as an excuse to make light of COVID-19.

On Wednesday (April 1), the City posted a warning to their Instagram account asking Hamiltonians not to make the pandemic a laughing matter by faking illness.

“April 1 is April Fools Day, but COVID-19 is no laughing matter,” the post says. It then goes on to list the kinds of activities they would like residents to avoid.

Among them is pretending to cough or sneeze or causing a disturbance for “social media fame.”

“COVID-19 is a global pandemic. It is not funny,” the post concludes.

As of Tuesday, there were more than 100 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton. Eight of them are currently hospitalized and two are in intensive care.

It’s safe to say that most Hamiltonians would be humbled by those grim numbers but for those who remain unaffected: read the room and control yourself.
