Hamilton to celebrate the good old hockey game this weekend

Hamilton hockey fans, this is your weekend!

The Rogers Hometown Hockey tour blows through town this weekend and it's really quite a production.

The two-day hockey festival kicks off at the Morgan Firestone Arena in Ancaster on Saturday (Jan. 18) at noon. Festivities will continue throughout the day and into Sunday.

"Hamilton is a proud and passionate sports town with a long hockey heritage, reaching back to the 1920s with our Hamilton Tigers and bragging rights for Canada's very first Tim Hortons in 1964," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger when the tour's Hamilton stop was announced back in September.
.
"I am delighted that we will once again to welcome Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour to our city and celebrate Hamilton's love of hockey with the entire nation."

Eisenberger and ward councillor Lloyd Ferguson will be attending the festivities through the weekend, the City of Hamilton said in a press release.

The tour returns to Hamilton for its sixth season. Hosts Ron MacLean and Tara Slone are leading the celebrations and joining them are NHL alumni Shayne Corson, Steve Thomas and Marty McSorley.

Also on hand will be Hamilton's own Sarah Nurse, Olympian and a member of the Women's National Ice Hockey Team.

This year's ultimate NHL fan experience will include all new hockey-themed experiences, interactive games, food and entertainment while putting a spotlight on local NHL players and grassroots stories of community heroes.

The weekend's festivities wrap up with an outdoor viewing party of an NHL game broadcast live from the Sportsnet Mobile Studio.

Rogers and the National Hockey League (NHL) said they will also be donating grants to cover the cost of installing a multi-use sports net in Hamilton.

Multi-use nets transforms single-purpose basketball nets into a multi-sport structure, while also reducing costs and barriers so families can play sports year-round.

While the Rogers production rolls into town on Saturday, festivities got started a little earlier in Hamilton.

On Thursday (Jan. 16), Ancaster High School hosted a few games at the Morgan Firestone Arena against Dundas Valley High School.

On Friday, Frank Panabaker Elementary School will welcome Rogers Master of Ceremonies Kyle Buttenham, alongside RHH Mascots; National Women’s ice Hockey Team Members Laura Fortino and Sarah Nurse and the Steve Goodtime Rockin’ Hockey Show.
