A downtown Hamilton resident is recovering in hospital after jumping from a smoke-filled second floor bedroom on King William Street Wednesday night.

Hamilton Fire responded to an alarm call about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night to find the resident sitting on the front porch with a fire still happening upstairs.

“It was reported by witnesses that the resident jumped from the second floor,” said Assistant Deputy Chief Ryan Coburn. “The resident was taken to hospital by Hamilton Paramedics with a leg injury.”

The cause of the fire is still undetermined, but the damage was significant, estimated at $200,000.

The home is a converted duplex with seven tenants.
