Hamilton reports five new presumptive COVID-19 cases as province sees 483 new diagnoses

The number of confirmed cases is 256 and there are five presumptive cases in Hamilton, and 119 cases have so far been resolved.

So far, nine people have died from the virus and of those cases, all but one is associated with outbreaks at a number of Hamilton’s long-term care homes and all of the victims have ranged in age from 70 to 94.

Six of Hamilton’s long-term care homes have declared an outbreak. They are Heritage Green Nursing Home, Cardinal Retirement Residences, Wentworth Lodge, Chartwell Deerview Crossing Retirement Residences, Kingsberry Place Seniors Residence, and Clarion Nursing Home.

An outbreak among the staff at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton’s Special Care Nursery has also been declared.

There are 21 people being treated in Hamilton’s hospitals for COVID-19.

Also on Tuesday, the province is reporting that there are 7,953 COVID-19 cases throughout Ontario — up 483 from Monday — and 334 people have died, while 3,568 cases have been resolved.

The province says 769 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 255 being treated in intensive care units.The website says 199 patients are currently on ventilators.

The City of Hamilton’s data shows there have been 68 cases of COVID-19 in the city that indicate that there is spread in the community, in addition to other travel and contact related cases.

Overall, since the first case in Hamilton was diagnosed, 26 per cent of confirmed COVID-19 cases were identified as community-acquired.

In the last 10 days, 19 per cent of confirmed local COVID-19 cases were community acquired, 69 per cent are close or casual contact with a case and no travel history, 0 per cent have direct travel history and 12 per cent are pending investigation.
