The City of Hamilton is reporting that there are 599 cases of COVID-19 in the community as of Tuesday (May 19) — six more from Monday’s reporting.

This time last week, Hamilton’s caseload sat at 490.

This spike in cases can be linked to the outbreak declared at The Rosslyn Retirement Home in East Hamilton last week, where 63 residents of the 64-bed facility have tested positive for the virus.

There are 20 Rosslyn staff members who have also contracted the virus in the city’s worst outbreak at a long-term care and congregate care facility during the COVID-19 pandemic so far.

One resident of the facility, a 70-year-old man, has died from the virus. Hamilton’s COVID-19 death toll is 27.

There are 12 long-term care facilities currently reporting an outbreak of the virus.

Two more outbreaks have been declared over the long weekend at local facilities: one at the Desmond and Peggy Little Retirement Residences in downtown Hamilton and at Alexander Place in Waterdown.

So far, one resident at each facility has tested positive for the virus and there are no reported staff cases.

Of the city’s 599 COVID-19 cases, 394 have been resolved.

There are currently 55 people being treated for the virus at Hamilton hospitals. This number is the highest it’s been since the pandemic came to the city and is the result of a decision to remove a number of residents from The Rosslyn late last week.

The province is reporting that there are 23,384 cases across Ontario as of Tuesday, which is an increase of 457 in 24 hours.

The provincial death toll is 1,919 — which is 15 more from Monday — and the total number of resolved cases is 17,898.

UPDATE: Hamilton’s death toll has risen to 28 as of late Tuesday afternoon after Hamilton’s Medical Officer of Health confirmed that an 84-year-old resident of The Rosslyn, a man, passed away in hospital on Tuesday.
