Hamilton reopening dog parks, Bayfront Park Boat Launch, and some sports activities

This includes the boat launch at Bayfront Park, which is set to reopen tomorrow (Saturday, May 16), and all dog parks in the city which will reopen on Tuesday, May 19.

Hamilton’s municipal golf courses will begin to open next week, with city staff currently working to get the courses up and running.

“It is anticipated that King’s Forest will reopen on Wednesday, May 20 and Chedoke will open next weekend,” the city said.

Additionally, tennis, pickle ball, and figure skating activities are expected to return by the end of May within certain parameters and at certain locations. Residents are asked to wait for an update from the city before trying to resume these activities.

City facilities and programs remain closed at this time. Hamilton Street Railway customers are asked to wear face masks and the city encourages residents to continue only using public transit for essential travel.

“We are continuing to follow provincial emergency orders and the province’s emergency declaration, currently extended to June 2,” according to the city.

“The city is working on a plan to slowly and safely reopen facilities and resume regular services and operations in accordance with public health and provincial direction, and we will share the plan with Council and the general public on May 27.”

In Hamilton there are currently 527 total COVID-19 cases (up 15 from Thursday’s report) with 521 confirmed positive cases and six probable cases (cases for certain symptomatic individuals where laboratory results are not available, inconclusive, or negative).

According to the city, 72 (14%) of these cases were ever hospitalized and 31 (6%) of these cases are from facilities with active outbreaks.

25 deaths (5%) have been reported in Hamilton.

At this time, 375 cases are considered resolved (71%).

The city states that noticeable increases in confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton are the result of changes to testing criteria and local mass testing events in institutional settings, and not necessarily the result of increasing local activity.

The province says that 428 new COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Ontario and that over 1,800 residents have died of the virus. 

As of 10:30 am on May 15, Ontario is reporting 21,922 cases of the novel coronavirus in the province. The province says 1,825 people have died of the disease, while another 16,641 cases have resolved.

The province says 986 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 179 being treated in intensive care units. The website says 135 patients are currently using ventilators. 

According to the website, 510,841 tests for the virus have been completed and 14,373 possible cases are under investigation. The website says 18,354 tests have been completed in the last day. 

The province and city are continuing to update their numbers on a daily basis.
