Hamilton Police Service is mourning the “non-suspicious” death of a colleague who reportedly died during an “incident” at the police headquarters.
“Earlier this morning we lost one of our own. This death is being investigated as non-suspicious,” police announced today (Sept. 27) in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “This is a profoundly sad time for our HPS family. We are working to support the family and our members following this tragedy.”
Police told inthehammer.com they won’t be providing further details, including the position of the member and the cause or circumstances of the death.
“We have suffered an immense loss. To our members, please lean on & take care of each other,” Hamilton Police Association posted on X. “There are supports to if you need someone to speak with. Board members, member support & external services are available to help us through as we struggle with the loss of our brother.”
It was uncertain if the member died while on duty. The Hamilton Spectator reported that an officer had died during “an incident” at police headquarters after midnight Wednesday (Sept. 27).
“All I can say is that he was a good man and I will miss him dearly,” a source who knew the deceased officer told inthehammer.com Thursday. The person wanted to remain anonymous.
Hamilton police officers had gathered at the Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial over the weekend to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
“We stand proudly to remember the courageous officers who have given their lives to protect and serve,” the force wrote in a social media post. “Today reminds us that behind every badge, there is a hero’s story, and behind every uniform, there is a family’s sacrifice. We pause to reflect on the dedication, bravery, and selflessness of our law enforcement officers. They are the true guardians of our communities, and their memory lives on in our hearts.”
