Hamilton Police, along with the Toronto Rock lacrosse club and MADD Canada, teamed up to launch the Festive RIDE Lane Campaign outside the First Ontario Centre Thursday afternoon.
The launch included plenty of superheroes, mascots and ticket giveaways as police kicked off their annual campaign to curb drinking and driving during the holiday season.
The program sees officers stationed around the city to work checkpoints to ensure drivers are sober. Numerous police services across the province including Hamilton, Peel, Durham Toronto and the OPP will team up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving to conduct breathalyzer stops around the province.
The programs typically run from late November to early January to capture the spike in impaired drivers going to holiday parties.
The campaign is especially important as too many drivers are not getting the message that impaired driving kills. Peel Police declared 126 impaired charges during last year’s campaign while Durham Police reported a 25 per cent increase in impaired driving in 2022, even though the police service pulled over fewer people.
Following the kick-off at First Ontario Centre Hamilton Police will be operating checkpoints at unannounced locations around the city.
