Hamilton police identify 14-year-old murder victim
Hamilton police have identified the victim of the fatal assault that took place outside of Churchill Secondary School in the city's East End.
At a press conference Tuesday (Oct. 8) afternoon, Det. Sgt. Steven Bereziuk confirmed Devan Selvey, a 14-year-old Churchill student, was stabbed to death outside of the school Monday afternoon. Selvey's mother was present at the time of the assault.
Two teens, one 14 the other 18, have been charged with first-degree murder. Both appeared in court on Tuesday and have been remanded to custody until Oct. 21 when they are scheduled to appear in court via video.
The named of those charged cannot be released under the rules of a publication ban.
Bereziuk confirmed that two more teens, both 16, had been arrested as of Tuesday afternoon but they have not been charged as of yet. Police say they are the outstanding suspects described on Monday.
Police cannot identify the suspects, citing regulations under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Another male youth was arrested Monday night but was released by police unconditionally.
The relationship between Selvey and those accused of his murder is still under investigation and Bereziuk said he was unable to comment, but he did confirm that Selvey and the suspects were students, whether former or current, at Churchill.
"We believe there is some element of premeditation in this case," Bereziuk said in reference to the first-degree murder charge. "It's difficult to comprehend. This has been a fast-paced dynamic investigation."
Police also confirmed that they located what they believe to be the murder weapon after completing a ground search Tuesday morning. Bereziuk said the knife was found by HPS very near the place where the fatal assault happened behind the school.
