Hamilton councillors and the mayor were urged at Wednesday’s (Oct. 2) General Issues Committee meeting to show the love.

Nicole Smith, a regular attendee at the weekly Love in the Hammer demonstrations outside City Hall, appeared before the committee to urge members of city council to be more visible in their support of the Love in the Hammer movement.

Smith explained that Love in the Hammer is a gathering of people who are located to the left of the political spectrum and they include members of the LGBTQ2S community and people from different cultural backgrounds who stand together for “love and inclusion.”

“It’s time for everyone to make a stand for love and inclusion,” Smith said. “[We need you] to show up and stay with us.”

In reference to recent events in Hamilton and abroad, Smith pointed to the Love in the Hammer hashtag #NeverAgainisNow which references the rise of the Nazi party in Germany in the 1930s. Hate is on the rise again and people are scared, Smith said.

Smith called for better ‘two-way’ communication between the mayor and council and the people of Hamilton.

“Too many people feel angry and frustrated and unheard,” she said. “We need all of you to stand with us.”

She concluded her presentation by thanking members of the council, including Nrinder Nann, John-Paul Danko, Esther Pauls, Brad Clark and Maureen Wilson for being visible supporters of the movement,
