A Hamilton man is facing three provincial charges after videos emerged, depicting him allegedly mistreating his dog, by whipping and dragging the animal down a sidewalk.

The incident, which took place in late June, has garnered attention and led to legal action by Animal Welfare Services (AWS).

AWS removed the dog from the custody of the individual involved. Subsequently, charges were filed against the individual responsible for the alleged abuse, under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act.

The charges include causing distress to an animal, permitting distress to an animal and failing to provide adequate and appropriate medical attention.

According to the Animal Welfare website, those found guilty of such offences may face fines of up to $130,000 for a first offence.

Additionally, they could be subjected to a lifetime ban on animal ownership or a maximum of two years of imprisonment.

“The dog remains in the care of the Chief Animal Welfare Inspector and is receiving all appropriate care.” said, Hunter Kell, Press Secretary, for the Office of the Solicitor General

Kell also confirmed that the individual was formally charged on August 17. The legal proceedings will take place at the POA Court located at 50 Main Street East on October 25.
