A Hamilton game developer and animation studio has released a unique new virtual reality game just as gaming is seeing a spike related to the COVID-19 quarantine.

Moonray Studios launched their underwater shooter game for PC, entitled ‘Tidal Shock: Early Access’ on Monday (May 4).

“[It’s] a fast-paced arena shooter that’s easy to pick up, difficult to master and packed with strategic combat,” the game’s description on YouTube claims.

Instead of offering a ‘battle royale’ type play, Tidal Shock is more in line with objective-based ‘king-of-the-hill’ mode of play — where one player comes out on top.

The game allows for four to eight players to battle it out in 360-degree action inside a neon-lit aquatic arena to capture the reactor and create a ‘tidal shock’ to beat out the competition and earn a ‘charge cube’.

The importance and purpose of the much-coveted charge cube won’t be revealed until the game progresses beyond early access.

Players are decked out with seven underwater weapons that offer a range of rarity settings, including shields, a variety of guns and something called a torpedo sled.

The game is in early access, which means that while it can be played, the Moonray team is still working on developing the game further. Player feedback during its early access run will go a long way to shaping the future of the game.

So far, reviews of the game have been pretty favourable, with one likening Tidal Shock to the wildly popular Fortnite.

One of the elements one seems to have to get used to is the fact that game is staged in an underwater setting which means gamers who are used to shooter games have to consider that attacks can come from virtually anywhere (ie: above and below).

The game is now available for US$7.99 on STEAM.
