City council has approved the assembling of an “economic recovery task force” which will aim to position Hamilton for both short-term and long-term economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

City council has approved the assembling of an “economic recovery task force” which will aim to position Hamilton for both short-term and long-term economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Announced today by Mayor Fred Eisenberger, the city’s Economic Development and Tourism and Culture teams will be reporting back to council for the creation of this task force.

It will be made up of representatives from local business, labour, industry, and academia, Eisenberger reports.

“The whole idea being: Let’s help facilitate the renewal and getting back into business all the businesses that have been shuttered up until now,” the mayor said.

The task force will reportedly assist businesses as they deal with issues such as financing, personal protective equipment, and more that have resulted from the pandemic.

“Hopefully we can create some sort of a best practice process that will help each individual business speed that process along,” said Eisenberger.

The move comes after the province announced earlier today that certain businesses will be allowed to reopen on Monday as part of the first stage of Ontario’s reopening framework.

More information on the city’s economic recovery task force and when it will be assembled is expected in the coming weeks.
