First-degree murder charge dropped for 18-year-old suspect in Bracci-Selvey murder

On Friday (Dec. 13), the first-degree murder charge was dropped against the 18-year-old suspect in the Devan Bracci-Selvey homicide.

The youth appeared in court in Hamilton earlier in the day Friday. The first-degree murder charge was dropped and the following new charges were laid:
- Assault with a Weapon
- Administer Noxious Thing
- Possession of Prohibited Weapon
The 18-year-old has been released on a Recognizance by the Justice of the Peace with conditions. A publication ban has been implemented and police will not be commenting further.
Bracci-Selvey was stabbed to death outside of his high school, Sir Winston Churchill, in the city’s east end, in October. The fatal assault took place in front of Bracci-Selvey’s mother, who was at the school to pick her son up.

The Bracci-Selvey family and friends of Devan say the murder was the culmination of repeated bullying.
Shortly after the murder, two youths were charged with first-degree murder in the case: a 14-year-old and the 18-year-old. Both are former students of Sir Winston Churchill.
Police have suggested previously that the 14-year-old wielded the knife in the attack on Devan.
The 14-year-old remains charged with first-degree murder in the death of Devan Bracci-Selvey.
