A special eatery in downtown Stoney Creek will soon be closing its doors for good.

A special eatery in downtown Stoney Creek will soon be closing its doors for good.

Sprinkles on Top, an Ice Cream parlour, bakery and tea room located on King Street East, just a couple doors down from The Village Restaurant, announced over the weekend they would be closing due to family health issues.

“My heart breaks to have to do this but we will have to close the business as of Labour Day (Sept. 7th),” wrote Sprinkles’ owner, Michelle Sutherland in a Facebook post announcing the decision.

“My staff have gone above and beyond to keep things running smoothly and I will never be able to thank each one of them enough for all they have done to keep things going through this very trying time for my family and also through the Covid situation.”

This magical little shop has been a bright light in the heart of Stoney Creek for a number of years now and is a favourite place for many Hamilton families for making memories and indulging in a vast selection of sweet treats, light lunches and truly decadent high teas.

It’s not uncommon to see happy faces tucking into massive ice cream cones from some of our province’s world-class dairies out front of the colourful storefront, or, prior to COVID-19, birthday party-goers dressed in their princess best attending a tea party in Sprinkles’ beautiful Lavender Tea Room.

Since the announcement, Sprinkles’ owners have received an outpouring of support, though many are expressing their dismay at the loss of such a special space and are sharing their fond memories.

“My family and I have so many incredible memories from cookie decorating events, gingerbread house making events, tea room, custom cake requests and of course all the baked goods and ice cream. You created an atmosphere in your store that will be never be forgotten,” writes one Facebook user.

“So sad to hear this. It is one of my little great-grandsons place to visit. God bless you,” wrote another.

It seems as though the Sutherland family is hoping someone will be able to purchase the business to continue this very special tradition.

“I would love nothing more for someone that would love an ice cream parlour and tea room to buy the business and carry on with it,” Sutherland says in her Facebook post.

“Failing that we will be selling many of the contents.”

While the tea room remains closed, Sprinkles says they will still operate their ice cream parlour and bakery until Labour Day. They are currently offering for ‘Tea for two to go,’ and picnic boxes.
