Later this month, the city plans to host a public engagement to open the floor to residents to discuss racism-related issues faced by Hamiltonians.

Last week, the city announced that they were hoping to hear lived experiences of racism and what people in the community feel needs to be done to address these issues.

The results of the Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre Survey will also be on hand for attendees to review and they will be open for discussion as well.

“The purpose of the event is to share the results of the survey that evening and engage citizens in a deeper discussion on the themes collected,” said Jodi Koch, director of talent and diversity for the City of Hamilton in an email to inthehammer.

“We are striving to engage the community in a meaningful dialogue on the lived experiences of racism in Hamilton and how HARRC can provide support and resources to address those issues in an effective manner.”

The event, planned for the evening of Oct. 29, will be held at the David Braley Health Sciences Centre across from City Hall.

Tensions in the city have been running high for months now as the community has been grappling with the issues of hate and racism. A number of protests, including one last weekend at Mohawk College out front of an event where Maxime Bernier appeared, have turned violent.

“Details of the event are still being finalized,” Koch said. “We will be working with our Corporate Security team to provide a safe and supportive event for all attendees.”
