Hamiltonians turned out in droves to protest climate change Friday (Sept. 27) at Gore Park.

It was a festive atmosphere but make no mistake, the people of Hamilton had an important message for our country’s leaders.

“Change the system, not the climate,” the crowd chanted as Hammer City Samba drummed the beat.

Hamilton businesses closed and students left their classrooms to gather in the downtown core over the lunch hour in support of the Global Climate Strike.

The protest was among 85 taking place across the country on Friday and amongst hundreds taking place around the globe.

A furore over the climate change crisis has been reignited by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg whose passionate address to the UN emergency climate summit in New York earlier this month, has inspired millions all over the world.

On Friday, Thunberg was in Montreal for that city’s climate strike which saw attendance in the hundreds of thousands.

The City of Hamilton, alongside other municipalities in the region, declared a climate change emergency earlier this year.
