Car stolen from Hamilton turns up in Fort Erie 18 days later

A 17-year-old car stolen in Hamilton January 5 turned up in Fort Erie Tuesday after Niagara Police performed a welfare check at a home in a rural area west of town.

District 5 (Fort Erie) uniform officers made the arrest and recovered the 2007 Ford Freestyle crossover vehicle January 23 after the check at the home near House Road and Garrison Road.  Further investigation also discovered multiple stolen tools on the property.

The suspect responsible for the stolen vehicle was located and placed under arrest.  The suspect also had three outstanding arrest warrants for previous incidents.

Franklin Lewis, 33, of no fixed address, was charged with four counts of possession of stolen property, eight counts of theft, break-and-enter and fail to comply. Lewis also had three outstanding arrest warrants for previous incidents.

He was held in custody pending a video bail hearing that took place Wednesday at the courthouse in St. Catharines.
