Despite the steep decline of passenger traffic, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport remains Canada’s largest domestic express cargo airport.
It’s such an essential hub for the movement of goods in Hamilton and beyond that last month, the airport saw a 10 per cent increase in cargo activity.
Cargo traffic moves through Hamilton International in a 24/7 operation and is facilitated through partnerships with some of the world’s biggest currier firms: Cargojet, DHL, UPS, Amazon, Canada Post and Purolator.

Munro Hamilton International Airport in a press release.
“It is with great pride that we acknowledge the role that the Airport and its partners are playing during this crisis while supporting the supply chain for the City of Hamilton, Ontario and Canada.”
One of the more important deliveries to come through HI last month came by way of Shanghai, via Vancouver and contained 75,000 pounds of personal protective gear.
The airport also announced that construction has started again on DHL’s ambitious expansion that will see their facilities at HI nearly quadruple in size.
The 200,000 sq-ft., $100-million facility is expected to open in 2021.
DHL also announced this week that they are introducing a direct cargo flight from Hamilton to London, England that will run five days a week over the next few months.
Work has also been happening on the airport’s Runway Rehabilitation and Modernization Project, which kicked off last year.
HI says in a press release that workers on the project have been exercising safety measures and physically distancing themselves to protect against the coronavirus.
“Efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19 are unprecedented,” said Puckering.
“The Airport is here to help, and our employees and partners are on the frontline to ensure trade continues through a robust supply chain.”
