UPDATE: Armed person reported near Hamilton high school prompts lockdown

Update: 1:30 p.m. A police sweep of the property did not uncover any weapons in the school. As a result, the lockdown has been lifted.

“It is important to emphasize that both staff and students remained safe as officers worked to verify the information reported of a weapon,” police said.

Officers remain on scene to continue their investigation.

A Hamilton high school is on lockdown following reports of an armed person in the building.

Sherwood Secondary School announced a lockdown shortly before 12:30 p.m. on May 10. They announced a “potentially violent threat” on school property through an emergency alert system.

Hamilton Police confirmed the report shortly thereafter saying they’d received reports about a person with a weapon. They are currently combing the school building in search of a suspect. They provided no further details or description of the individual.

“Police are onsite and investigating,” they wrote, “Students and staff are safe as police are working to clear the school.”

The school sits at 75 Palmer Road on Hamilton’s East Mountain.
