Hamilton Police have arrested and charged a male with mischief after he allegedly called to complain about the Amber Alert issued by Niagara Regional Police Service to report five missing children from the area.

On October 1, 2019 at 5:04 p.m., Hamilton Police received a 911 call from a male who allegedly stated he was calling to tie up emergency lines on purpose and did not have an actual emergency.

The male caller was allegedly angry about receiving the Amber Alert on his phone while he was attempting to rest. He allegedly stated that he would continue to call about the ongoing alert.

The caller has been identified as Douglas Bagshaw, 70, who was arrested and charged with mischief, who was later released on a promise to appear in court.

Hamilton Police would like to remind the public that 911 is for emergencies, that Amber Alerts are a warning system that alerts the public of a suspected child abduction who may be in danger and that non-emergency calls take up resources and could delay response to those in a genuine emergency.
