In Hamilton, we are uniquely situated to really get the most out of all four seasons, but there’s just something about Fall in this city that is simply breathtaking.

Whether it’s getting to watch our greenspace slowly change to fiery fall colours or falling back in love with our Ti-Cats, there’s an energy around town that is simply electrifying.

Here are five reasons why Hamilton is the best place to be in autumn.

Mum show at Gage Park

Earlier this year, the Gage Park Greenhouse reopened its doors following a lengthy and extensive renovation. Visitors have come from far and wide to take in the new gardens and the stunning new building that houses them. Since 1920, the Hamilton Fall Garden and Mum Show, has been wowing visitors with displays featuring chrysanthemums. This year promises to be spectacular with more than 200 varieties of Chrysanthemums and more than 75,000 blooms on display. The show runs this year from October 18 to 27.

Hamilton Ti-Cats back in action

Tis the season for tailgating and Ti-Cats. Fall is the time that while we’re getting back into the swing of things, so too is the world of sports. Our beloved Tiger-Cats are definitely in the thick of things come fall and there’s pretty much nothing more Hamiltonian than braving the uncertain fall weather in the stands at Ivor Wynne Stadium (oops! I mean Tim Hortons Field) to cheer on the yellow and gold with (insert preferred football/colder weather beverage here) in hand. This year has all the makings for a particularly exciting season because so far, they’ve been racking up a lot of wins. Eat ‘em raw, Hamilton.

Watching our greenspaces change seasons

We are truly blessed in our access to nature within city limits. We get to be up close and personal with the changing seasons and for most of us, we just have to look out our back door to appreciate mother nature in her seasonal glory. Our many walking trails and parks are the perfect spots to take in the changing seasons but it’s the escarpment that makes Hamilton THE place to be to witness this colourful transition. One need only to look to the escarpment to track the progress of autumn as it changes from lush greens to oranges, yellows, and reds and beyond.

Fall fairs and festivals

Many consider summer to be the season of festivals and fairs but fall plays host to some pretty special events within Hamilton city limits. This year, the Ancaster Fair (Sept. 19 to 22) is in its 169th year. The fair offers plenty of food and entertainment and the time-honoured Demolition Derby. The Rockton World’s Fair (Oct. 10 to 14) is one of the largest agricultural and livestock events in Canada and has been named one of Ontario’s top 10 fairs. Battlefield House and Museum hosts the Apple Festival, a one-day event (Sept. 28) that features a pancake breakfast, games, pumpkin decorating, demonstrations, entertainment, and a bake-off. These are just some of the many events happening across the city during this time of year.

Agricultural experiences

From Apple orchards to pumpkin patches, Hamilton is home to a number of agricultural destinations. Dyment’s Pumpkin Patch in Dundas, open during the month of October, is a popular fall tradition for families and school tours. They host special events, hayrides and have a little playground for the kiddies. There’s also Puddicombe Farms in Winona that offers apple picking, wine tasting, and train rides throughout the estate, nestled into the base of the escarpment. During the harvest, there’s no better place to be than Hamilton to get out and take advantage of this season of plenty.
